Wood confirms Caldwell's contract extension

The questions about Jim Caldwell's future in Detroit can stop. Lions president Rod Wood confirmed Sunday that Caldwell has signed a multi-year contract extension with the team, though he didn't specify any details.

Caldwell's original four-year contract was set to expire after this season.

"We took care of that months ago, as you guys know now," Wood said. "We wanted him back as our coach. It just got leaked out this week, so we confirmed it."

Wood said keeping the extension within the organization was a wish of Caldwell's. The Lions extended him following last year's playoff season "just to get it behind us and focus on football."

Caldwell led the Lions to a 29-21 record in his three-plus seasons with the team, including playoff appearances in two of the last three years. He has the best winning percentage of any Lions coach in the modern era.

Caldwell has the Lions off to a 2-0 start heading into Sunday's matchup with the reigning NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons at Ford Field.
